SISTERS OF THE REVOLUTION. Letture politiche di fantascienza, DWF (121-122) 2019, 1-2

Editoriale

Sisters of the revolution

Sisters of the revolution

The paper provides a survey on Feminist Speculative Fiction while telling the story of a political entanglement and relationship. The birth of “Fuori Luogo – Femminismi e Fantascienza” festival is an occasion to pinpoint the link between Speculative Fiction and Feminism as a political practice of collective imagination; between ambiguous utopias and dystopia, Feminist SF is a precious tool to understand our times, make western categories and dichotomies explode and create political alliances between human and non-human subjectivities. So Ursula K. Le Guin, Donna Haraway, Mary Shelley, and many others can play a main role in these hard times, leading us to powerful thinking otherwise and powerful political alliances.

MATERIA

OLTRE WESTWORLD. Le promesse di cyborg, ghost e mostri
Starting with Haraway's suggestion of analyzing and rewriting the main science fiction productions, this essay has a twofold aim. On one hand, focusing on the need for a new analysis of FS objects, it aims to highlight the insights on our techno-mediated lives provided by the tv-series Westworld (Nolan and Joy, 2016), that clearly show us the risk we run in forgetting the embedded and embodied matrix of the cyborg-subjectivities. On the other hand, focusing on the need for rewriting in particular FS novels and tv-series, it aims to show how a collective, participative and creative process can pro-actively change the dominant plot and in so doing can open the path to the spread of posthuman ethics where humans and non-human animals and machines matter as matter.
RIBELLARSI COME UN’ANCELLA. Note a partire da Margaret Atwood
This article examines how the handmaid's tale costume from the TV series "The Handmaid's Tale", based on Margate Atwood's novel, has become a symbol of global protests for reproductive justice. The text, therefore, analyzes the TV series and the novel in order to grasp the elements that make it relevant to the contemporary situation: the call to nature to impose order, the understanding of self-determination as a risk, and the link between ecology and the preservation of social hierarchies.
The use of this imagery is linked to the climate of general retreat in terms of abortion rights, reproductive rights and freedom and self-determination over one's own body. Yet, if it is true that feminist movements have always worked on disruptive and subversive imagery, in this situation a question arises: what kind of message does the call to the handmaiden's tales pass? What effect does it have on the viewer? Are we able to imagine new forms, which instead of underlining the risk of subalternity transmit our strength?
UN TRAGUARDO INIMMAGINABILE. Intervista a Gaja Cenciarelli, traduttrice di Margaret Atwood
Gaja Cenciarelli is a translator and English teacher who is among the Italian scholars that spent most time, passion, and thoughts analyzing Margaret Atwood's work. In 2018 she translated Atwood's Bluebeard's Egg and Other Stories so we asked her to talk to us about her books. More than 100 people were present at the meeting and we discussed for about 4 hours, nevertheless, we felt we need to ask her a few more questions to report it.
LA POTENZA VISIONARIA DI MARY SHELLEY
Lady Frankenstein e l’immonda progenie (Iacobelli editore 2018), a book edited by Anna Maria Crispino and Silvia Neonato, guides us toward an insight on Mary Shelley's famous novel as the first SF masterpiece of our times, so rich in feminist, ecological and political issues that make it a relevant and fundamental reading for our complex times
NEL RITMO DI URSULA K. LE GUIN. Il saper fluire del centauro
In her essay "A Matter of Trust", feminist, anarchist, and Daoist writer Ursula K. Le Guin stress the importance of overcoming a dualist vision of life. Comparing her writing activity to horseriding, she neither considers herself just as the horse nor as to the rider: she is a centaur. Alessandra Chiricosta and Gaia Leiss analyzed how the "centaur" philosophy is developed in several of Le Guin's science fiction and fantasy writings and how they find ways to embody the centaur in their experiences of taijiquan and tango practices.
OCTAVIA BUTLER. Una scrittrice non aliena
Octavia Butler was an African American SF writer active in the '70s and '80s. Her writings focused on racism, bodies, through the lens of science fiction, while the surroundings around her were still formed by white male writers, not infrequently soaked with systemic racism.
RAGAZZE ELETTRICHE. Il potere e la disobbedienza
The article focuses on the novel "The Power" by Naomi Alderman, namely on the way the author highlights and explores the issue of the relationship between women and power, using a complex symbolism and pointing out the way to face that striking challenge woman are called to face out in our present times, days of a present so close to becoming dystopic.
EROINE MARVEL E ALLEANZE FEMMINISTE
Since comic book production, Marvel Universe has been known for its heroes, and for its beautiful female characters. Over the years, heroines have changed their features in several ways, both psychologically and physically. The paper moves from the question if heroines are well-known just for their beauty, who has created those characters and those features? For whose sight were they created? Can they act a subversion in Marvel imaginary? Can we consider them revolutionary?
IL POTERE ALTERNATIVO DELLE EMOZIONI. Intervista a Nadia Tarantini
Nadia Tarantini is the author of the cult book of the Nineties Il risveglio del corpo. In 2017, at the age of seventy, she comes out with a science fiction novel Quando nascesti tu. Lorella Reale essayist and ecological feminist talks with Nadia on the main issues arising from the novel: eternal life, the disappearance of emotions, desertification of the planet.
ELENA FERRANTE. Storie di affinità postumane
The focus of this article is to identify the dialogue between the feminist discourses and Elena Ferrante’s narrative strategies. By bringing out the “storytelling philosophy" (Cavarero 1997) of La figlia oscura (Ferrante 2006) and La spiaggia di notte (Ferrante 2007), this paper shows how the author moves from a narrative outlined on the model of the “confidence relationship” (Libreria delle donne di Milano 1987) to one that prefigures the model of the “post-human affinity relationship". From this point of view, La spiaggia di notte becomes the complement and counterpoint of La figlia oscura, where the narrative centrality of the doll configures the passage from a female self mythopoetic, linked to the biological-divine mother-daughter relationship - typical of the concept of " female genealogies "(Irigaray 1980; Muraro 1990) -, to a complication of this concept through the dialogue with the cyber-feminist theory (Haraway 1991, 1992, 1995, 2016).
